resevoir replacement not available.
June 7, 2013
This item does keep the water from freezing in the winter, but I agree with the comments from several that it is hard to get the base on after refilling and often - way to often- the base falls off as you invert it and you get soaked.

My latest gripe is that they don't have replacement resevoirs. My plastic resevoir broke the other day and I am told by both the merchant and Farm Innovators, the manufacturer that they don't have replacements. You are expected to buy a whole new unit. Not only is it expensive, but it creates unnecessary land fill.

3 Gallon Heated Waterer
December 31, 2012
I liked one I bought for the chickens so much, I bought another for my ducks. If anyone says they have trouble making the top and bottom stay together, there are instructions with it that tells how to lock top and bottom. I had spillage until I read the instructions and then put it together right. I hang one for the chickens and a second for the ducks. Ducks are extremely messy and hanging the waterer helps keep their house clean. I tried a metal waterer but it started to rust within a year. The design may not be perfect, but in good weather the waterer will balance on its top for filling and in winter, I put it upside down in a metal bucket for filling.

Not Good for Alaska
October 8, 2012
I purchased one of these last winter and the thing was a nightmare to use. As others indicate getting the bottom back on and properly secured can be a difficult and mostly miserable process when it is a dark winter morning at -25 F. I realize nothing works at that temperature, but regardless this thing is a design fail at all temperatures. Also at -40 the cord literally snapped in half, which is acceptable to me considering no electronic products are really designed for those temps, but the difficult use factor is not. Not a product for any serious winter.

water not freezing but hard to fill
January 13, 2012
handle broke in first month of use. it does keep the water from freezing but the bottom likes to come off when you are flipping it back over to hang and it make a huge mess when it does come off top part and the handle are way to weak. On a hole wish I didn't spend the $ on it.

Why it doesn't fill from the top
December 6, 2011
I have never seen a waterer that does. It makes sense, though, since once you open the top, the vacuum would be gone, and all of the water would dump out.

It is not too hard to fill, you do have options of opening the plug, ot taking the bottom off. It would be nice if the bottom was easier to line up and put back on, but it is OK. In the summer, I open the plug and fill. In the winter, I bring it in the house, take the bottom off, and carry it out upside down, then flip it right before I go into the chicken yard, so if it spills it in outside, and not on the birds.

This one works pretty good, but when the temperature goes below zero, it will ice up a little. We had to break the ice on ours this morning.

It will definetly keep your water from freezing up wich makes it nice but it should have better lock system so when your done filling it and turning it back over it doesn't come unlocked and spill on you on those cold days !!!

3 gallon waterer
February 10, 2011
I found this item very difficult to use in cold snowy weather. It is difficult to fill while it is standing on it's top, upside down without knocking it over. I also found it very difficult to tell when I had the base screwed back on correctly. You also get wet flipping it back over after filling. It should have a removable cap to fill from the top though that might possibly freeze during extreme cold. I still prefer the separate heated base and galvanized waterer.

With a heavy duty extension cord running to the coop, the waterer does its job in that the water does not freeze.

However, it is very inconvenient to fill. The opening is on the bottom, so you have to either upend the waterer and pour water into the small opening, then flip it over and hope half of it doesn't splash out.

Or, you can unscrew the top from the base and fill the top, then replace the base, hoping you have it screwed on right or it will fall off and empty out when you turn it over.

Why can't they make an electric waterer that fills from the top? It would be so much easier.

It is also difficult to plug the cord into the unit as the prongs on the water are inconveniently placed.

Good News/Bad News
January 17, 2011
This is the second winter using this heated waterer. We had -3 degrees this week (Southern New England) and the water stayed beautifully liquid as it has consistently every day we've had it in use these two winters. However, filling this is miserable. Filling from the bottom with a hose in winter isn't possible with a frozen hose. We don't have running water at the coop. Filling it in the house is dicey at best because the bottom easily can come off when you tip it right side up--ask me how I know--really didn't want to mop the floor that day. I fill two gallon orange juice containers with warm water (for my hands) and take them and the cleaned fount out to the coop steps, remove the base, flip the top upside down, fill it, fit the base on the top which doesn't happen easily, and then carefully flip the whole thing right side up. The bottom has slipped off several times but at least the water is not in the coop. It keeps the water heated and unfrozen beautifully, but is NOT easy to refill.

January 11, 2011
Works great!!!!!!!!! Easy and convenient to use. It does my flock of 9 chickens for four days before I have to refill it, and I have not had the water freeze since I started using this waterer, even when it gets below 10 degrees F.

I'm not all that pleased with this product. I've found that it does not keep water from freezing at temps lower than 15 to 20 degrees. However I must addmit that I'm having trouble finding any poulty heater that will keep water from freezing at any temps below 10 degrees.
